What's your favorite [EDIT: alcoholic beverage cocktail]? If it's not obvious from the title, what's in it? If you know a good recipe for it, care to share?

Red wine: I flip back and forth every few months on whether I prefer pinot noir or shiraz.

I'm also VERY fond of a nice tawny port. Or are you asking about cocktails?

I was thinking about cocktails, but far be it from me to stop someone from talking about wine and port!

Do you have Wink up there? It's a grapefruit soda. I like to drink it mixed with cranberry juice and gin (my sister prefers rum). It is YUM-O. And we should probably name it.

(I can't get Wink in TX. Yet another reason to hate it.)

Kahlua and cream. mmmmmm.

Hm. Whiskey Sours, Sombreros, Pina Colada with amaretto and nutmeg...

Jade Edouard or Verte Suisse absinthe prepared in the French style, a gimlet with fresh lime juice, a Vesper (aka a "James Bond martini"), or a Sazerac made with cognac instead of rye. Or good Scotch, neat or over ice, but only in the fall. Or a G&T with a slice of lime or lemon, but only in the summer.

Really, anything that's a) complex, b) smooth, c) not too sweet, and d) doesn't contain tequila is probably fine. :-)

Traditional margarita - salted rim, up and not frozen or blended, etc. etc. Mmmm.

I'm currently all about the caipirinhas.

Get a bottle of cachaça, which is a Brazilian rotgut distilled from sugar cane juice (as opposed to rum, made from molasses). Put 2 oz. of cachaça in a shaker. Take a lime, quarter it, juice it as much as possible, throw in the remains. Add 1-2 teaspoons of sugar. Shake with ice. Drink. Get seriously buzzed. Probably best to have only two; more than that and you might end up having a rock star moment. :)

I also love foofy girly drinks, like chocolate martinis, B-52s, the Thai martinis at Cuchi Cuchi, and the like.

A good margarita, not blendered, those Thai martinis at Cuchi Cuchi, Brandy Alexanders, and chocolate martinis that [livejournal.com profile] skreeky makes

Hmm.

  • Really good single malt Scotch.
  • Drambuie.
  • Rusty Nail (50-50 Scotch and Drambuie; this is what the cheap Scotch is for.)
  • A good gin martini, straight up with a twist.
  • Gin and tonic on a summer evening.
  • Irish Coffeee on a winter evening.

Do I have to choose one...?

Cosmopolitan, pref. with vodka and Grand Marnier.
White Russian (vodka, Kahlua, half and half)

As long as you've negotiated with the various drinks and everyone is comfortable with your being polytastorous, it should be fine.

A pisco sour. Failing that, a sidecar, which is nearly the same thing.

These days...MOJITOS! (http://www.tasteofcuba.com/mojito.html) Light rum, sugar, mint, lime juice, and some club soda....very dangerous :)

[identity profile] hammercock.livejournal.com 2006-06-06 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] skreeky's chocolate martinis do indeed kick righteous ass.

I'm with the margarita, caipirinha and Cosmopolitan crowds. Also Black Russians -- none of this milk stuff in my girly drink, thank you :-)

Classics?

[identity profile] cinnalynn.livejournal.com 2006-06-07 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Champagne cocktails, especially bellinis, especially those made with some fresh fruit puree; bellini = peach; I had a wonderful pear and cardamom based champagne cocktail over the winter. Yes, mojitos. Good margaritas. BUT what do you do when you find yourself at an open bar event and none of your favorites are available or good, as happened to me recently?? I am now on a learning expedition to find out which classic cocktails I like, so I know what to order in such situations (which admittedly don't occur often :-). I even bought a classic bartender's guide, with the history of each drink. Let the tasting begin.

a manhattan!

it's made with whiskey (specifically rye whiskey, though i also like to use bourbon), vermouth (usually sweet, but you can use dry) and a dash of bitters. shake with ice, strain and add a cherry!

mmmm...so tasty!

[identity profile] hotpoint.livejournal.com 2006-06-07 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
sounds like a great idea! hmm, do I have any cherries...

[identity profile] chillguru.livejournal.com 2006-06-07 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
enjoy!

also...curse you! for i have none of the above and now strongly desire this delicious beverage...

Mmmm mojito...

I have been digging the mojitos a lot the past couple of years... but it is frustrating how few bar-type-establishments are stocked with fresh mint leaves in crushable quantities (yet).

They seem to be on the trendiness upswing though, I stumbled upon a restaurant while visiting Halifax a few weeks ago that, instead of a "martini menu" or generic mixed drinks menu, actually had a specific Mojito Menu (link)
