it sometimes happens that after awhile the body ceases to produce antibodies to some pathogen. this doesn't happen that often with herpes viruses, because those tend to establish themselves in "hiding" in nerve cells, and then come out from time to time and renew the antibody response (which is why one's first outbreak is usually the worst). but it's the reason in general that one needs, say, tetanus booster shots.
