You know what I suck at? Practicing presentations. I always feel like, hey, I've spent all this time putting together a bunch of material I know really well, so I don't really need to practice, right? Except, of course, I know it makes things go more smoothly if I've run through it out loud, standing up as though in front of a crowd. And yet ...

Oh, man. All my sympathies.

Time and geography permitting, I'm happy to be a sounding board for such practice in the future.

Back in school, we used a crowd of "friendly" fellow grad students for our practice talks. Once you made it through one of those practices, the actual talks themselves were a breeze.

[livejournal.com profile] hawver once fell asleep while I was practicing a trial research presentation. Not encouraging.

I find that while I feel like it takes a lot of activation energy to go somewhere I can stand up and practice my talk, it is pretty much just as effective to sit at my desk, staring at my slides and giving my talk to my monitor.

(As long as I am disciplined about doing it in a chunk and not switching to other windows and stuff. One thing to keep myself focused is to actually time the presentation, because no matter how much you know the material you still need to make sure it is appropriate to the time you have.)
