You will almost certainly need a badge. Mind you, depending on the session, guards are often very lax.

If it is like most scientific conferences, you aren't supposed to get into a session without a badge. However, it may be possible to sneak in if the guard isn't paying attention using the "If you look like you know you are supposed to be there, most people won't check your credentials" theory.
