HIC!

What's your favorite remedy for hiccups?

Just curious. No, really.

[identity profile] jordanwillow.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Holding a deep breath as long as I possibly can.

[identity profile] metagnat.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing that works on my own hiccups is sustained and repeated swallowing of liquid - IE a nice, big glass of water which I would preferably chug right down without taking a breath. Fewer than ten gulps doesn't always do it and then I have to drink another ridiculous amount of water.

It is particularly fun, and by fun I mean "augh" when this happens right before I should be going to sleep.

Focusing on when the next hiccup will come.

Good luck!

Sex. Ideally with someone who doesn't have the hiccups.

This method works great for me. But you have to make sure to take as deep a breath as possible, pushing your diaphragm down.

[identity profile] jordanwillow.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It also helps me if I can somehow time the big inhale to correspond with the next hiccup, so I sort of "catch" the hiccup with the inhale, if that makes sense.

[identity profile] bloodstones.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Stand up, touch my toes, and focus on breathing slowly and evenly. Really, I think anything that will call your diaphragm will get rid of them.

[identity profile] mud-puppy.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Peanut Butter! Seriously, eat a spoonful of peanut butter all at once and in the time it takes to eat it, my hiccups are gone :P Of course, I might be unique in this, but it works every single time.

[identity profile] veek.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Almost exactly like this for me, but I tend to not take the deepest breath I can--I find it lets me move my diaphragm more.

[identity profile] thespian.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
this one's mine.

[identity profile] harimad.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Take a deep breath, hold it, and try to burp a little burp.

The method that actually works? Patience.

Favorite? Breath-holding. Most effective? Having the crap scared out of me.

That’s almost ex—*hic*—actly what I was going *hic* to say. By the *hic* way, do you have the *hic* hiccups? Just out of *hic* curiosity.

Alternate breathing: breathe in through your nose as slowly and as long as you can, and exhale through your mouth as slowly and as long as you can. Repeat. After my diaphragm has spasmed once or twice in the middle of an inhale, the hiccups are done.

Ditto!

Drinking upside down...seriously. My method of choice is to very slowly sip water from the "other" side of the glass (aka the far side, so my head is tipped over). It kind of simulates drowning in a much less scary way and works (for me) every time.

Breathing slowly and deeply into my abdomen.
It doesn't necessarily make the hiccups go away any faster, but it makes me less anxious about them.

Come to think of it, breathing slowly and deeply into my abdomen until it goes away on its own" is my favorite remedy for a lot of things.

I lay down on my back, with my knees bent, and close my eyes and concentrate on my breathing. Works every time for me.

Eat one teaspoonful of plain sugar. For me, it always works, right away.

[identity profile] dougo.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto. Water fountains (aka "bubblers") work quite well for this (perhaps because it's coupled with leaning your head over?)

[identity profile] rising-moon.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

I typically distract the sufferer by saying, "look right at me, right in my eyes. Now, hiccup! Really -- hiccup!" Repeat until the hiccup cycle is well and truly over.

BOO!

[identity profile] moominmolly.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
This! plus then drinking a full glass of water, while my breath is being held.

[identity profile] anotherjen.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This too, for me!

[identity profile] anotherjen.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee!

[identity profile] metagnat.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm. I've never tried a water fountain for this, but I totally will, now.

[identity profile] heinleinfan.livejournal.com 2011-07-22 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I typically put a pen/pencil/chopstick/something of that size/shape in my mouth, and then drink a glass of water while that is in my mouth.

I have no idea why it works, but it works for me every time.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_sabriel_/ 2011-07-22 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Similar to this, my never fail remedy is to drink out of a straw while plugging my ears.
Works every time.
Good Luck!

[identity profile] wanderyng1.livejournal.com 2011-07-23 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Acupressure. I know where to press to interrupt the spasms so I usually go with that.

[identity profile] kjc.livejournal.com 2011-07-24 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Three quick inhales (with very little exhale) and then holding my breath usually disrupts the spasms in my diaphragm.

I've shared this with a number of people and it seems to work most of the time for them as well.

[identity profile] 42itous.livejournal.com 2011-07-25 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I ask someone to pound on my back. Usually it helps with the hiccups, but it always feels good.

[identity profile] starphire.livejournal.com 2011-07-27 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally. This has always worked for me. Trying to convince other hiccup sufferers that they should try it is often a losing proposition, though.
