Why, [livejournal.com profile] kcatalyst, I'm glad you asked! Because that's one of the coolest bits!

No, throw away your expensive bubble level. That thing's for shit, anyway.

To calibrate your A-frame, you... wait, do you have your A-frame ready? Okay, good.

Now, you take your A-frame and you put it on the ground. Preferably, the two legs will be obviously not level with each other (though they don't have to be wildly off). Let the stone with the string swing free until it's hanging down, then tilt the frame slightly so you can mark where the string touches the bar of the A. Got it?

THEN. (Are you ready? This is when it gets super cool.)

Turn the A-frame around. Put each leg exactly where the other leg was previously. Repeat the part about letting the string hang free and then mark where it hangs along the bar of the A. Now you have two marks, like, oh, I don't know, parenthesis, each of them exactly halfway from the "level" mark on the bar. Then, you can simply use a piece of string to measure the distance between them, fold it in half, measure half the distance, mark it, and voila! You have a magical, high-tech level!

Couldn't you just wet yourself over how amazingly excellent that is??
