Last night, my four (4) three-liter (3L) cocktail aging barrels arrived. Hooray!

Except, uhm, this means that I need 12L of spirits to start using them. If your typical bottle holds 750mL, this means I need 16 bottles, assuming I use the full contents of each. So, uh, I guess I'm investing in booze this weekend.

I don't remember which of you it was who gave me the wine bottle puzzle thingy, but I need to tell you that I've finally found the perfect use for it!

One of my VPs won a bottle of wine in a trivia contest this week, but he was on his way to the airport and only carrying on luggage, so he couldn't bring it with me. Since I'm the Minister of Fun, he gave it to me.

So I stuck the hard-won wine into the puzzle, struggled with it a while to get it all set up, and it's now sitting on the edge of my desk, which is located in a spot that LOTS of people walk by.

Within five minutes, three people had gathered around it to start trying to figure it out.

Success!

Yesterday, I was so busy having an awesome day that I didn't post this until now. So, today, I give thanks for play.

Like most people, I played a lot when I was little, and then, as a young adult, I moved away from playing or reveling in play in the same way as a way to distinguish myself from a child, even if only in my own perception. In recent years, I've found my way back to play, and goofiness, and the kind of simple fun of joking around and laughing and playing games and being foolish. And the world of play has expanded, too, so it encompasses movie titles and advertising signs, word games and number games, tricks played by me and tricks played on me ... and many more.

Playing; it works, bitches.

The phrase of the day is "cheese tower building competition".

Party details TBA.

So, hey, there's this awesome event coming up: Figment. And in order to be the most awesome it can be, it needs YOU.

Figment is a free, participatory arts event that started in NYC in 2007 and is coming to Boston for the first time this year on Saturday, June 5. I'm volunteering to help make it happen, and I'm super excited about it. AND I want you to help, too!

I'm the activities/workshops/games curator, so I'm handing some fun, interactive projects, and I know lots of you have stuff that I think would be a great fit. You don't have to have a super polished formal kind of thing to put on an event or workshop; just have an idea for something interactive and fun or interesting (and legal) and you're all set. Have you always wanted to set up a finger-painting station in the middle of Memorial Drive? Want to help kids make magic wands? Enjoy teaching people to stilt or juggle or turn cartwheels? What about setting up a human-sized checkers game? Or capture the flag? Whatever! We want your fun ideas to come out and play. You can have something that lasts a little while or several hours.

To submit a project, go here. If you have questions about submitting a project, check out the FAQ.

Do it! Do it!

SO. You know what's awesome? In-flight wireless. Seriously, there are some parts of living in the future that are really friggin' great. I wonder if I try to book my next Virgin flight while on the plane if I get an extra good deal?

[Brief pause.]

No. Oh, well.

Anyway, so I had this vacation planned. And then it was nearly ruinedcanceled due to Virgin America giving in to the hype about last week's big storm. Thanks to the not-panicked thinking of [livejournal.com profile] spike and [livejournal.com profile] moominmolly, I ended up, instead, on a train to NYC last Wednesday, and then on a plane to SF a day late, but well within time to rescue the vacation.

At this point, there are way too many people I want to see in the Bay Area each time I visit, so I inevitably end up missing a lot of them (you), especially on these shorter long-weekend trips. I'll be back in May for a longer visit and if I missed you this time, I'll hope to see you then!

As for the day I didn't get arrested ... I don't think I was actually in danger of being arrested so much as getting a ticket/fine, but it turns out that the Oakland Parks and Recreation have a more constrained definition of "nudity" than I do (or than Massachusetts, for that matter). Pics in a later entry...

I'm sad for vacation to be coming to a close, but thankful for the convenience of cross-country travel, and looking forward to being home.

Things I didn't do today, an incomplete list:

Get arrested

Dear Internet,

Yesterday, I took a vacation. Instead of going to work, I drove (well, passenged) 5.5 hours to Montreal with [livejournal.com profile] moominmolly and Natalie, spent about the same amount of time kicking around the city and looking at bugs, then drove back to Boston, arriving home shortly before 2am.

While we were away from Boston, we:

* ate tasty beef jerky
* discussed major and minor life events
* cracked jokes
* giggled
* watched a lot of vidoes (actually, just N did this)
* were hassled by a Canadian border guard about the possibility that M was kidnapping N out of the country
* were impressed by Canada's careful security procedures ("Do you know this woman?" "Yes." "How long have you known her?" "Six or seven years." "Is she telling the truth?" "Yes!" "Okay, you can go ahead.")
* drove by an extraordinarily stinky sewer truck
* navigated Montreal largely without the help of our magical phones
* discussed making a lampshade out of cockroach wings
* ate a delicious meal at a restaurant with amazingly bad service
* bought pain killers that are not available in the US
* dropped off a box on [livejournal.com profile] lightcastle's doorstep
* drove around in well-signed circles trying to get back on the highway
* panicked about a lost passport
* unlost the passport
* took a wrong turn at nowhere and therefore took a different route home
* got really tired

It was great.

Next time I go to Montreal, though, I think I'd like to spend a night there.

I friggin' love giving talks. I get a little bit nervous beforehand, just enough that it's kind of a rush to give the talk, and then when I'm done, I'm all buzzy-high about it, and I typically feel like I did a good job, covered the material I wanted to cover, have a few things I could have done better, but generally enjoyed it and conveyed some useful or interesting pieces of information. Plus, since I get to pick the topic and put together the presentation, I get to sound like I know everything one would ever need to know about such things and people think I'm awesome. It's great fun.

Tonight, I spoke in Belmont on pedestrianism, giving a modified version of a standard "pedestrian 101" presentation we give to community groups and professional organizations with an interest in that sort of thing (want me or someone else to come give this talk to your group or neighborhood organization? let me know!) plus a focus on snow clearing issues. It was my first time giving this talk since I started this job, and it went great (she says with utter lack of modesty). I think the best comment I got after the fact was that it was good that the evening started with me, because I raised the bar for all the rest of the speakers. Hey, really? That's pretty damn cool to hear.
