If you can hear them at that distance perhaps it's a situation where a polite call to the cops is warranted? I'd hate to have the next set of sounds be those of physical rather than verbal violence. But that's just me.
The one time this happened to me I was walking home (to my then apt in Cambridge) from the T and quite clearly heard a male voice screaming threats of violence, and a female voice responding with foul language. I went home and called 911. Dunno if that was "the right" thing to do, but it seemed so at the time.
my downstairs neighbor? gets really drunk, loud, and incoherent. then her husband beats her up.
as far as contacting police goes (not that you're even considering that, but for the future), we contacted a national abuse helpline about our downstairs neighbors, and they said what you should do as a bystander really depends on the way your police department operates. some police departments have officers specially trained to handle domestic abuse in ways that protect the abused. it seems likely cambridge is one of those, because cambridge is civilized. when i called the jax pd, though, they made it clear that they weren't. they didn't even know what i meant when i suggested it.
Still, it could be worse. I lived in the South End for a year, back in the early '90s when gang violence was peaking. We used to hear gunshots from time to time.
Shortly after we moved into our current place, we were treated to our across-the-street neighbors having a screaming argument for most of a morning. Fortunately, they moved out soon after.
