The "personal statement" is the most difficult genre to write. The. Most. Difficult. But you can do it. signsoflife has a good idea there. I'll try to think of other suggestions. One that comes immediately to mind is to sit down with a friend and have a chat about the questions Umass asks, and have that friend jot down key phrases that sound authentic.
