I love it when people say, "it goes without saying that ..." before saying quite a lot about the thing.

Right up there with when someone says "Obviously..." and goes on to say something that wasn't at all obvious.

Fortunately, my kids will both come back to anybody saying that with "Of course it's offensive, or you wouldn't be saying that."

No, I mean, I honestly love it. Some of the others people have mentioned, not so much, but that one always makes me giggle.

Many years ago, with no irony whatsoever, I found myself saying "Yeah... I have long since resigned myself to being the sort of person who, well, who says things like 'I have long since resigned myself to'."

I am often sheepish about it.

It was particularly bizarre in conjunction with aphasia.

I would like to hear someone introduce a celebrity with "Our next speaker needs no introduction" and just leave it at that.

That would be so great.

I once saw someone do basically that for a speaker (invited academic talk). It was actually kind of awkward and not great. But I imagine it would better for, like, the president or Madonna.

Yeah, it works better for people who actually need no introduction. Harimad's real complaint is "And now for someone who needs no introduction, blah blah blah, [five minutes of career notes], ladies and gentlemen, Pete Seeger!" and also when they say "needs no introduction" about people who certainly *do* need an introduction.

It goes without saying that you'll be talking quite a lot about the thing...

I totally agree with you because, well, it goes without saying.
