Two and a half years ago my jeep broke down during my evening commute. I had to wait a couple of hours for the tow truck to arrive. By the time he picked me up, the repair shop had closed and, since my then-sweetie was out of town, I walked the mile or two home on the bike trail in the dark. I was so unbelievably annoyed and frustrated and tired and angry. I walked and walked and as I passed through a wooded area, I heard a soft snick just off the trail. I froze and warily looked to the side.

There was a family of deer grazing right next the trail. My padding along -- barefoot, my high heels hurt too much -- hadn't disturbed them. I stood, gape-mouthed, and watched them. They looked like grey ghosts there in the gloom. One finally noticed me and took a couple of steps towards me. We stood and regarded each other for a little while. The deer eventually grew bored with me and returned to grazing.

The walk was no longer tiresome after that magical moment.

Oh, yeah, I love that kind of thing. And when it happens in such a crappy/rushed mindset, it's the perfect reminder to slow down and appreciate the moment.
