I can't come up with a finite list of foods that make me dance in my seat, so instead, I give you this:

My philosophy on foods is, broadly, I'll try anything twice. Why twice? Because many times, the first time you try it is too traumatic or wrought to really know if you like it or not. And also, tastes change. So... here is my list of foods that I've tried once and don't look forward to trying a second time (but resolve to do so anyway):

1. uni (this is sea urchin ovaries, for those of you who don't keep up with sushi)
2. ants (they were actually fine, if a bit stale, and quite leggy, but I admit having a hangup about bugs)
3. durian (in truth, I only had a durian candy, but it didn't make me look forward to the real thing. nonetheless, someday...)
4. rocky mountain oysters (I ate one on a dare in high school, but I don't remember anything about it)

There are probably more, but I can't think of them.

4. EWWWWWWW...

Robyn's food theory- Do not eat anything you wouldn't touch before it was dead or anything bigger than one's own head at a sitting.

Durian is a crazy Asian fruit. Some people say it tastes fabulous; others say it tastes like rotting meat.

We must go places together! See, my philsophy on food is, broadly, I won't try it ;) So we balance out.

Ha!

*laugh* How did we ever end up together? :)

And thanks! It's from Guatemala ;)

I'm with you, for the most part.

Uni: I'd try again, to make sure, but the one time I had uni I found it kind of gross, with no redeeming characteristics.
Durian: Some day, I'd like to try an actual durian fruit. [livejournal.com profile] ratatosk claims you can get some variety of durian fruit in stores in Chinatown. Wanna?
Natto: I tried it once and it was basically revolting to me. I know I'll try it again, just to make sure I was right.

Uni: it tasted like the bad smell of a grocery fish counter concentrated into a goopy paste. But I will try it again, just... it's hard to get excited about it :)

Durian: Yes, let's! I've seen it at the Super 88, but I haven't been brave enough to get one, yet. Maybe when the weather's warm enough for us to do it outside?

Natto: There are things that challenge my determination to try anything twice, or even once. It can be hard to motivate. *nod*

Durian: Sure! We also need to get something known to be tasty to wash it down with. :)

Ooh, can I come? I'm all over eating weird foods.

I ate live ants in the Amazon jungle. Tasted like lemon!

And now, I'm on a quest for hakarl.

My philosophy on *life* is that I'll try anything twice. Basically for the same reason.

It's a good philosophy. I mostly adhere to it.

That whole hakarl thing, though...

Yeah, that's part of my philosophy on life, too, but I put an (almost) in front of it for that ;)

What's hakari?

And, yes, you can definitely join for the durianfest!

The ants I had we deep fried, so they mostly tasted like fried food -- chips or something -- but my friend had opened the bag the day before, so they were *stale* fried food. Less interesting, but... next time!

Ew, stale ants. The ones I ate were tiny but fresh, small enough that there was no tickling sensation putting them in my mouth (actually, licking them off of a twig), just little dots of lemon on my tongue. I'd totally do that again.

Hakarl is a traditional Icelandic dish: putrid shark. Apparently, this particular kind of shark is poisonous fresh, so they bury it and let it decompose, through which process the poison either goes away or becomes non-poisonous. Then they dig it up and eat it, usually chased with strong Icelandic spirits. I have read that it's an acquired taste like strong cheese, and alternately that it's the worst thing anyone's ever put in their mouths. How could I *not* want to find out?!

And of course, there are *some* things in life that I wouldn't care to repeat. But as a general rule, the 2x philosophy works for me.

How do they KNOW it tastes like rotting meat?

And: variations on a theme: I thought Rocky Mountain Oysters were just a legend.

Heh. Well, to be fair, what I've heard is that it tastes like rotting meat smells :)

And, no, not a legend!

I always figured Rocky Mountain oysters would taste like chicken gizzards -- though I no longer eat most organ meats because of safety concerns, I'd be all over trying testicles.

I'd be happy to try durian, at least once, and uni (and maybe natto) -- let me know if you need a partner in crime. (Eating ants, I think, would push too many of my buttons, though maybe if I were sufficiently tipsy I'd change my mind :-))
