Mar. 11th, 2005 05:32 pmI can't come up with a finite list of foods that make me dance in my seat, so instead, I give you this:
My philosophy on foods is, broadly, I'll try anything twice. Why twice? Because many times, the first time you try it is too traumatic or wrought to really know if you like it or not. And also, tastes change. So... here is my list of foods that I've tried once and don't look forward to trying a second time (but resolve to do so anyway):
1. uni (this is sea urchin ovaries, for those of you who don't keep up with sushi)
2. ants (they were actually fine, if a bit stale, and quite leggy, but I admit having a hangup about bugs)
3. durian (in truth, I only had a durian candy, but it didn't make me look forward to the real thing. nonetheless, someday...)
4. rocky mountain oysters (I ate one on a dare in high school, but I don't remember anything about it)
There are probably more, but I can't think of them.

Robyn's food theory- Do not eat anything you wouldn't touch before it was dead or anything bigger than one's own head at a sitting.

Date: 2005-03-12 01:22 am (UTC)And thanks! It's from Guatemala ;)
I'm with you, for the most part.
Date: 2005-03-12 12:40 am (UTC)Durian: Some day, I'd like to try an actual durian fruit.
Natto: I tried it once and it was basically revolting to me. I know I'll try it again, just to make sure I was right.
Re: I'm with you, for the most part.
Date: 2005-03-12 01:32 am (UTC)Durian: Yes, let's! I've seen it at the Super 88, but I haven't been brave enough to get one, yet. Maybe when the weather's warm enough for us to do it outside?
Natto: There are things that challenge my determination to try anything twice, or even once. It can be hard to motivate. *nod*

Date: 2005-03-12 01:36 am (UTC)Re: I'm with you, for the most part.
Date: 2005-03-12 02:11 pm (UTC)I ate live ants in the Amazon jungle. Tasted like lemon!
And now, I'm on a quest for hakarl.
My philosophy on *life* is that I'll try anything twice. Basically for the same reason.
Re: I'm with you, for the most part.
Date: 2005-03-12 02:19 pm (UTC)That whole hakarl thing, though...
Re: I'm with you, for the most part.
Date: 2005-03-12 04:31 pm (UTC)What's hakari?
And, yes, you can definitely join for the durianfest!
The ants I had we deep fried, so they mostly tasted like fried food -- chips or something -- but my friend had opened the bag the day before, so they were *stale* fried food. Less interesting, but... next time!
Re: I'm with you, for the most part.
Date: 2005-03-12 06:03 pm (UTC)Hakarl is a traditional Icelandic dish: putrid shark. Apparently, this particular kind of shark is poisonous fresh, so they bury it and let it decompose, through which process the poison either goes away or becomes non-poisonous. Then they dig it up and eat it, usually chased with strong Icelandic spirits. I have read that it's an acquired taste like strong cheese, and alternately that it's the worst thing anyone's ever put in their mouths. How could I *not* want to find out?!
And of course, there are *some* things in life that I wouldn't care to repeat. But as a general rule, the 2x philosophy works for me.

Date: 2005-03-12 04:34 am (UTC)And: variations on a theme: I thought Rocky Mountain Oysters were just a legend.

Date: 2005-03-12 08:44 pm (UTC)I'd be happy to try durian, at least once, and uni (and maybe natto) -- let me know if you need a partner in crime. (Eating ants, I think, would push too many of my buttons, though maybe if I were sufficiently tipsy I'd change my mind :-))
