Okay, so following on the heels of the so-far peak of the quarter-life crisis, I have a rough plan:

* August 31: Lease ends -- stuff will be in storage or backpack. Maybe bum around Boston for a week or so and...
* Sept 6 (ish) fly to wherever I'm going.
* Sept 8 - 19: Learn Spanish at some language programmy type thing
* Sept 22 - November: Do volunteer type work
* December: Travel
* Home for winter holidays of some variety

Now I just have to decide:

* What country?
* What language program?
* What volunteer program?

Hmm!

As to the first question, I'm kinda waffling between Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentina, but I bet good arguments could be made for Honduras, Nicaragua, Venezuela... Argh! Decisions...

Where? What? etc.

Sounds interesting and challenging, Rosa. If you want some input on that part of the world and its volunteer opportunities from the perspective of a community organizer/physician, let me know and I'll give you the contact info for my best friend, Doug, who spends part of the year volunteering at a health clinic in that area, speaks fluent Spanish, and knows his way around there.

Once I'm a little more settled in my thinking, I'll definitely take you up on that! Where does he do his work?

Hi Rosa,

I know a woman who spent several months in Peru, doing volunteer work. I could put you in touch with her if you'd like.

Peace Corps?

Is it necessary that this be a self-done thing or would it be worthwhile to investigate what the Peace Corps offers?

Peace Corps demands a much more significant investment of time, and the selection process is highly demanding. I don't really want to have to apply, etc, I just want to go do it :)

Ann wanted me to tell you that she has spent a lot of time in Latin America, traveling, studying, working, and volunteering over the last 20 years and that she would be happy to talk with you.
