I said no to recommending it because I'm a grown up who would never, ever, suggest to someone that sie didn't like that a 9 volt battery was an acceptable substitute for a vibrator as someone I might have hypothetically known in hypothetical high school might possibly have done.

This cries out for a separate poll:

Have you ever used a 9 volt battery as an alternative to a vibrator? Would you recommend others do likewise?

I have never licked a nine-volt battery...but now I'm curious.

I recommend you try it. Which is unsurprising, since that's how I answered the poll.

I always recommend people try new, interesting, non-damaging sensations.

Pleasant, no, but quite minor and, hey, it's new!

I believe that, at the time I tried it (at my electrical engineer dad's instigation), the first snarky thought that went through my head was "new taste sensation."

My browser doesn't have "snarky" in its dictionary. That's just wrong.

That is, in fact, wrong.

I can recall reading that it was a good way to tell if your 9V battery was fresh or dead. I remember it tasting sweetly metallic, with just a little sting to it. Definitely not scary or dangerous. It's nickel plated, so not really TOXIC or anything.

I always assumed everyone used this technique to test 9V batteries. I've done it all my life and figured it was universal. I have always wished they put the terminals of 1.5V batteries on one side instead of two so I could test them, too; although it seems likely the voltage would be too low to feel.

Really this is a big non-issue. It's no more unpleasant that putting putting a dollop of straight lemon juice on your tongue.

Totally agree. My dad taught me this as a way to know if the battery was still good and I just assumed everyone else did it.

Of course, telling my grandmom (his mother) this caused her to relate the story of how my dad nearly blew up the alley next to his childhood house with a home chemistry set at age 10...

Mom perspective, y'know?

Remind me to bring a 9-volt the next time I see you. :)

As a recovering Serious Scientist, I strongly recommend experimentally determining the pleasure principle in situations like this. Definitely should be tried, with a quick google of possible known effects :).

No, because I have shorted one with a screwdriver to see the pretty arc.

I never did it until I was an adult and was motivated by curiosity to overcome my sense that it was wrong to do so. I immediately regretted that I had ever done it. But then I am also someone who abhors electric shock of any sort and was somewhat traumatized last night when someone handed me a toy that shocked the user as a negative feedback without bothering to tell me that was what was going to happen. Bah.
