I picked up a whole new crop of mosquito bites last night. Most of them are on my feet. AAAIIIEEEE!! Soooo itchy!

And I know I should not scratch them, but MMMMMmmm does it feel good when I do!!! *resistsresists*

I can't STAND mosquito bites. urrrgh!! every time i go to the tropics I get the crap bitten out of me for two weeks, and then it just spontaneously stops (unless of course, i stay in a/c, thus not acclimating). I think the more you're acclimated to heat, supposedly the thinner your blood runs at the surface, and mosquitos like you less. I know that tourists seem to be the only ones to be severely bug bitten.

so when you go to guatemala, i'll feel for you. there's this stuff in a little pen-like applicator called 'stop itch' and it's basically just ammonia. if you put ammonia on a bite as soon as possible after you get it (even if you have no welt yet) then it alleviates the itch and duration. benadryl cream and hydrocortisone cream help too. helps you get over the acclimatising hump if you hate wearing bug spray. the non-toxic bug sprays seem to be oily (cause i think they're just essential oils, more or less), so sometimes i'll just put that on my feet and ankles.

if you're there during a hurricane or prolonged heavy rain (many days) then you might want to resort to bug spray if there are a lot of mosquitos, because your chances of getting Dengay increase. Hopefully you won't be in a very mosquito-y place!

Yeah, I'm bringing DEET, nasty stuff that it is, in hopes of avoiding whatever bugs might find me tasty. Also, I'll probably get some of the weird oil stuff so I don't always have to use deet. Blech. But! If I can avoid malaria and dengue fever, it'll be worth it ;) Good thought on the stop itch stuff, though. I'll definitely have to pick up some of it! Thanks for the tip :)

i forgot to mention the old home-remedy: apply roll-on deodorant to the bite as soon as possible and let dry. It works in the same manner as stop-itch, by drying things up. Before I found stop-itch I used to carry around a travel sized roll-on. I have no idea how either treatment effects your susceptibility to any bug transmissible diseases.

if you couldn't tell, i hate being itchy :)

Run hot water over your feet - hot as you can stand. Gives some of the relief of scratching with less of the "skin torn and bloody" feeling.
